Under-eye puffiness
Puffy eyes and swollen eyelids
Puffiness under the eyes is a mild swelling that often becomes more noticeable with age. This happens because the fat under the eyes is held in place by connective tissue, which weakens over time. As this tissue loosens, the fat that normally supports the eyes can shift into the lower eyelids, making them appear swollen. Puffy eyes are different from dark circles.
Puffy eyes are usually harmless but can look unpleasant and make you appear tired. Fortunately, something can be done about it! Book a consultation and we’ll discuss the possibilities together.
Causes of puffy eyes
Puffiness under the eyes occurs when the tissues and muscles supporting your eyelids weaken. The skin may start to sag, and fat that normally surrounds the eye can shift to the area under the eyes. Fluid may also accumulate under the eyes, making the area appear swollen. Several factors can cause or worsen this condition, including:
- Aging of the skin
- Fluid retention, especially upon waking or after eating salty foods
- Lack of sleep
- Allergies
- Smoking
- Genetics – puffy eyes can run in families
- Medical conditions, such as dermatitis, dermatomyositis, kidney disease, or thyroid eye disease
Treatment of puffy eyes
Getting enough sleep, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding smoking will help improve your skin and facial appearance by keeping your body better hydrated. However, in the case of puffiness, the main issue is not fluid, but fat.
At Huidkliniek Parkstad, we treat puffiness using a combination of approaches, such as special massage techniques, plasma treatments, and specific products to reduce puffiness. We are happy to offer you a customized treatment. To determine the best treatment (or combination of treatments) for your needs, we will first discuss the options during an intake consultation.
